Kid Recipe: No Fuss Rice Krispie Treats
A fast, foolproof, no bake treat for new cooks
Rice Krispie treats are a relatively simple dessert. They require few ingredients and tools and come together quite quickly but the result is always nostalgic and delicious and easily shared, the true markers of a great homemade dessert!
This recipe is a great entry point for kids interested in gaining independence in the kitchen or who want a quick kitchen project. It comes together in one bowl, and there is no stove or oven involved. It’s safe, foolproof, and approachable, but it still requires some close reading of the recipe. Success is almost guaranteed!
Butter: This is one of the main ingredients in this recipe, so I recommend using a good-quality butter to enhance the flavor. I use unsalted butter so you can control the amount of salt yourself.
Rubber spatula: It is the perfect tool for spreading, flattening, and shaping the Rice Krispie treats once they’re in the pan. It also makes dealing with the sticky marshmallow mixture much easier, so make sure your kid knows what it looks like and where to find it before getting started.
Rice Krispies: I use the name brand Rice Krispies but any crispy rice cereal will do! If you want to make them gluten-free, just swap in a gluten-free crispy rice cereal. Try these: Crispy Rice Cereal
Mini marshmallow: The mini version melts more quickly and are easier to measure and stir than large marshmallows. Most bags are 10 ounces, which is exactly what you’ll need for this recipe.
I wanted this recipe to feel like something a first-time cook could genuinely do on their own. Of course, seasoned bakers will enjoy it too because it’s fast and delicious. I designed the recipe so everything happens in one bowl, which means fewer tools to manage. Kids also use the microwave to melt the butter and marshmallows instead of the stove. That means less need for adult supervision and more room for kids to take ownership of their work and solve problems independently.
Kids will mix throughout the recipe. First, they’ll stir the butter and marshmallows until the mixture becomes smooth. This gives them a chance to practice patience as they work toward a clear visual goal. They’ll mix again once the Rice Krispies are added. This step takes a bit of muscle, but sticking with it pays off.
This recipe doesn't ask kids to do anything particularly dangerous, but it does ask them to stay organized. They'll need to gather everything before the marshmallows cool, read carefully, and stick with some sticky mixing even when their arms get tired. Those are exactly the kinds of small challenges that help kids build confidence in the kitchen.
Preview the recipe together and flag any steps where your child might need help.
Encourage your kid to try independently first and come to you when they need support; this builds confidence and problem-solving skills.
Mixing takes time, trust the process:
There are lots of sticky ingredients, and mixing takes a bit of muscle. This is a wonderful opportunity to teach perseverance and problem solving.
Set a short “mixing timer” (for example, 1 minute) and take turns mixing until it goes off.
Switch tools if needed. Hands are a great mixing tool!
Show your kid how to steady the bowl with their non-dominant hand while mixing with the other.
Place a kitchen towel under the bowl to keep it from sliding.
Microwave safety
Make sure your kid knows how to set specific times (20 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute), what containers and utensils are microwave-safe, and how to safely remove hot items using a dry cloth or oven mitt. Once they’ve mastered those basics, the microwave becomes a fantastic tool for independent cooking.
